Sibelco and BirdLife International Renew Global Partnership to Advance Biodiversity

Hilmar Rode Birdlife partnership signing

BirdLife International, the world’s largest nature conservation partnership, and Sibelco are proud to announce the 3-year renewal of a long-standing global partnership. This renewed commitment marks a significant step forward in our shared mission to protect biodiversity and restore vital habitats around the world.

Since the start of the partnership, Sibelco and BirdLife International have worked together to integrate conservation goals into our mines and quarries. The renewal of this relationship reinforces our shared vision: economic development and environmental stewardship can and must go hand in hand.

At the core of this renewed collaboration is a focus on long-term, mutually beneficial initiatives that protect wild birds, other nature and their habitats. Sibelco’s global footprint offers a unique opportunity to implement conservation actions across diverse ecosystems—from active extraction sites to post-operational restoration projects. BirdLife International brings its scientific expertise, global network, and deep understanding of the challenges facing specific species and their environments.

“Our partnership with BirdLife International is a cornerstone of Sibelco’s commitment to sustainability and biodiversity,” said Hilmar Rode, CEO of Sibelco. “We believe in responsible resource management, and we are proud to continue this journey with a partner that shares our values and brings world-class conservation knowledge to the table.”

Through joint projects, the partnership has already achieved notable success, including the restoration of degraded habitats, the protection of endangered bird species, and the integration of biodiversity targets into Sibelco’s operational planning. Moving forward, we aim to scale these efforts, enhance community engagement, and strengthen biodiversity reporting and monitoring systems, for species and habitats.

“BirdLife International is delighted to renew our collaboration with Sibelco,” said Lesley Dickie, Executive Vice President of BirdLife International for Conservation of the Regions. “Our partnership exemplifies how industry and conservation can work together to create positive change. By combining science, sustainability, and corporate responsibility, we can ensure that the natural world continues to thrive for generations to come.”

As global biodiversity continues to decline at an alarming rate, partnerships like this one offer a hopeful path forward - where businesses not only mitigate the environmental impact but actively contribute to the recovery of nature.

Together, we, as Sibelco and BirdLife International are setting a precedent for environmental partnerships that goes beyond compliance and towards long-term, science-based conservation impact.
